Gruene Boasts Oldest Dance Hall in Texas

The entire community of Gruene has been designated a historic town by the state of Texas.

Henry D. Gruene founded the town – whose name is pronounced like the color green – in 1872. His first home is now known as the Gruene Mansion Inn and is one of many local sites on the National Register of Historic Places.

Other interesting attractions include Gruene Hall, which is the oldest dance hall in Texas. Well-known entertainers who have performed there include George Strait, Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett. The line dance scene from the movie Michael, starring John Travolta, was filmed there.

Gruene is also known for its antique shopping, wine tasting, river tubing and variety of lodging options.
